afternoon chair the
downstairs neighbor
sends up smoke signals
from his cigar
the retired gruff gentleman
making me wonder if I myself
won’t in fact turn
out gruff if I make
it around to that
age and what will
it be?
time itself is
the major factor but
can’t I rise gracefully?
gotta let those cigarettes go or…
of course jobs themselves if
they go against…
let me clarify
see, you could already get a sense
of the direction I was
going with that
so I’ll sharpen it by saying
there are those who work
who are compromised
and those who work who are extremely
compromised in which case
sanity is at stake
sanity as in humanity
oh the humanities!
that is my challenge as it is yours
figuring out how to do things
balancing emotions
sorting through the anger
acting righteous in each moment
putting earnest endeavor in
putting the perfectionist in check
putting on warmer clothes in the winter
afternoon writing sessions that
get lost or thrown away
but the every day flow is gained
kept held lovingly
as a baby kitty cat into
my arm pit in a hale storm
it is good to be in the place
you call home
in the little community
here that reminds me of
my dad watching Mash
take the rent out of the
scenario and we’ve got
something even better
